Immediate Source of Acquisition
The Upton Sinclair Collection was officially established at Occidental College Library in 1950 by College President Arthur G. Coons, with a donation of books, magazines, periodicals, letters, campaign materials, pamphlets and ephemera from Sinclair collector and friend, Dr. Elmer Belt, along with his wife, Ruth. Portions of Belt’s collection originated from the library of Willard S. Morse, an esteemed book collector of the early 20th century, as evidenced by his bookplate on a number of materials. Dr. Belt continued to donate materials to the Sinclair collection until his death in 1980.
