Scope and Contents
Documents the planning, development, and transformation of Occidental College’s Eagle Rock campus from its opening in 1914 to the present. It includes materials related to academic and administrative buildings, athletic facilities, residence halls, and campus infrastructure. Biographical / Historical
Chilcott Hall, dedicated in 1959 as a residence for eighty-four women, was named for Edward R. Chilcott and his wife Doris Carver Chilcott in appreciation of their gifts toward the project and the long association with Occidental by them and others of their family.
Edward Chilcott, born in Kansas in 1897 lived to the age of 105. He graduated from the College of Emporia, attended Harvard, and earned a M.S. degree in engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. In 1932, he became president and owner of Technical Products Company, a firm specializing in sound and recording systems for the motion picture industry, Along with his business career, he found time to engage in dairy farming and cattle ranching in western states He was elected to the Occidental Board of Trustees in 1961, and served as an active member until reaching emeritus status in 1967.
Doris Carver Chilcott, a Los Angeles native, attended the Occidental Academy in 1910 and 1911, and met her husband when she was a student at the New England Conservatory of Music. Beyond her music-related philanthropies and other community involvements, she devoted years of service to the Occidental College Women's Club and its forerunner, Las Amigas, and other support groups. She passed away in 1990.
Edward and Doris Chilcott are best remembered by Occidental alumni for the All College Barbecue held each fall from 1946 until 1971 at one of their Southern California ranches.
Four Chilcott children attended Occidental: Donald '49, Robert '51, Elizabeth '53, and Richard (E.R., Jr,) '58.
