Scope and Contents

This series consists of 17th to 19th century materials of the Ned Guymon Mystery and Detective Collection, not including those pertaining to Arthur Conan Doyle or his famous hero, Sherlock Holmes. It encompasses first editions of Gothic fiction, 19th century "triple-deckers" (3 volume novels) and penny dreadfuls, an incomplete Second Folio of Shakespeare, true crime and trial accounts, first magazine appearances of Edgar Allen Poe stories. Other major strengths in this series are Mary Shelley, Wilkie Collins, Charles Dickens, Sheridan Le Fanu, Mark Twain, and Bram Stoker.

Language of Materials

From the Collection:

Bulk of the collection is from English and American authors, some of which are translated into languages that include Danish, Spanish, Italian, Swedish, Japanese, and Finnish. A number of French writers, such as George Simenon and Eugene Francois Vidocq, are represented in English translations.
